The Slow Mo Guys

Gav and Dan break down how lightning works while continuously shocking Dan at 28,000 frames per second with a Van de Graaff Machine.

The difference in electrical potential changes with altitude. The local atmospheric conditions matter to get the lighting started. Those shearing forces due particles movement is a common process during any convection and this is not a cause of lighting. I mean there is always a potential difference in the atmosphere. It is rather breaking the resistance of air by means of high enough potential difference. Stormy weather provides such conditions as the air becomes also more conductive. Same happens during volcanic eruption.

Well I think we got more than one bolt in the Van de graff's but they were really tiny cuz :- 1. the distance is too short 2 . The fact that bolt is really fast (the speed doesn't change) but distance is reduced so time is even less , moreoer RESISTANCE of path is less cuz the path itself is less compared to actual one..

As someone with a really low electrical resistance, I feel Dan's pain. I get zapped a lot, especially by car doors. I startled my physics lecturer once when playing around with a multimeter. I had set it to measuring current and held the ends of the leads. I got a pretty high reading. My lab partner tried the same thing and got about a tenth of what I had.
K.C. 3 महिन्यांपूर्वी
I think you were measuring your resistance. If you read ten times your partner's resistance for yourself, your body actually resisted current flow ten times more than him & dissipated 1/10th of the power.

@Little Valkyrie I thought I was the only one. It's just a split second but it hurts. Apparently dry air causes more static shocks so that could be why.

Gizmo Games Kelvin and Centigrade values are very similar at high temperatures. Since you only add 272 to Celsius to get Kelvin, adding 272 to 30,000 doesn’t make a big difference.

careful with a VG you can injure muscles from the current causing them to twitch unnaturally. i injured my forearm demonstrating one i think i was hit too hard or too many times. it was a college project not a very powerful unit but it was pretty strong. it pulled the same muscles you would injure if you have tennis elbow and it lasted on and off for about 4 years. be careful!!

Awesome, but... you've got it wrong, about how lightning being created. There is no "ice particles hitting each other", that cannot generate charge, because you will need DIFFERENT materials rubbing each other to create a static charge. Charge accumulates mostly during water awaperation, so basicly the ammount of OH- particles is not equal to the H+ particles in the vapour, so there is an actual charge being send to the sky, and also there is a solar radiation, that is why there is more lightning on a planet at a specific time (when solar radiation hits weak spots in magnitisphere) and where the is a lot of water.
