Problem is, you are trying to capture an event known to propagate within tens of nanoseconds, with equipment able to visualise events at milliseconds speed. Therefore, all the action will always happen within a single frame. Nice video, thank you...

As a high school science teacher, it's one of my petty joys... Van de Graaff generator... February... my class with the class clown. If it's dry enough, I get that clown from up to a metre away. This year, I'll grab the rubber gloves to add the effect!

The difference in electrical potential changes with altitude. The local atmospheric conditions matter to get the lighting started. Those shearing forces due particles movement is a common process during any convection and this is not a cause of lighting. I mean there is always a potential difference in the atmosphere. It is rather breaking the resistance of air by means of high enough potential difference. Stormy weather provides such conditions as the air becomes also more conductive. Same happens during volcanic eruption.

Well I think we got more than one bolt in the Van de graff's but they were really tiny cuz :- 1. the distance is too short 2 . The fact that bolt is really fast (the speed doesn't change) but distance is reduced so time is even less , moreoer RESISTANCE of path is less cuz the path itself is less compared to actual one..

THAT is a ridiculous amount of hair on Gav's neck. Like abnormal amount.
T Zhao8 महिन्यांपूर्वी
It's really funny that Dan didn't seem to know the capacity reduces significantly right after an electric discharge. Which meanthe get a secondary shock while much further from the ball :)) And the standing hair at end of vid is classic!

Little Valkyrie8 महिन्यांपूर्वी
As someone with a really low electrical resistance, I feel Dan's pain. I get zapped a lot, especially by car doors. I startled my physics lecturer once when playing around with a multimeter. I had set it to measuring current and held the ends of the leads. I got a pretty high reading. My lab partner tried the same thing and got about a tenth of what I had.
K.C.6 महिन्यांपूर्वी
I think you were measuring your resistance. If you read ten times your partner's resistance for yourself, your body actually resisted current flow ten times more than him & dissipated 1/10th of the power.
Lisa Thomas Cherebin7 महिन्यांपूर्वी
@Little Valkyrie I thought I was the only one. It's just a split second but it hurts. Apparently dry air causes more static shocks so that could be why.
Little Valkyrie8 महिन्यांपूर्वी
Jimmi K Not particularly. And this test was done in an air conditioned lab in autumn, so not a sweaty environment
